\nSLF is a band caught between worlds. Known for its iconoclastic combination of free-jazz passion and Afro- Cuban percussion excitement, the amorphous Philadelphia unit practically invents a new genre with each composition. Featuring a deeply talented pool of musicians trained in a variety of idioms gives the band the ability to incorporate so many genres while maintaining authenticity.
\nThe band’s newest release, Change Over Time<\/em>, is the band’s finest to date, taking the energy and craftsmanship to a new level.
\nThis performance will feature Kevin Diehl (percussion), Chuckie Joseph (perc. and vocals), Rich Robinson (perc.), Ira Bond (perc.), Matt Engle (bass), Dan Scofield (saxophone), Julian Pressly (saxophone), Todd Margasak (cornet), and Okomfo Adwoa (perc. and vocals)\u00a0.<\/p>\n
\n<\/a>Cynthia G. Mason’s haunting voice, razor-sharp insight, and delicate guitar work create a mood not unlike that of Philadelphia itself\u2014a mix of melancholyand hope. From 1996 to 2003, Mason was a mainstay in the Philadelphia indie scene. As an emerging artist, she had earned local and national critical acclaim anda large fan base with a series of self-released recordings. After taking a step backfrom her music to complete a law degree, Cynthia has emerged with a sharper sound and a new set of songs. Her new album, Quitter’s Claim<\/em>, has earned rave reviews from Philadelphia Inquirer<\/em>, City Paper<\/em>, Philadelphia Weekly<\/em>, Philebrity.com and others.<\/p>\n
\n<\/strong>An enjoyable set of instrumentals as primordial as they are melodic, as trance-y as they are dance-y. Their sound is fun and sombre, with the cool mellow of the saxophone mixing with the itchy funk of the guitar and the muscular bass groove. It is simply impossible to categorize the sound, but it’s easy to enjoy. ESG? Blurt? Can? Krakatoa? Like a good stew, there’s a touch of everything in Public Record’s sound.
