{"id":1001,"date":"2009-03-26T11:04:32","date_gmt":"2009-03-26T16:04:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hightwo.com\/ht\/?p=1001"},"modified":"2009-03-26T11:04:32","modified_gmt":"2009-03-26T16:04:32","slug":"1001-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hightwo.net\/two\/1001-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Reviews &#8211; Public Record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Author: <span class=\"post-footers\">Royce Epstein<br \/>\nSource: Philly Girl About Town<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillygirlabouttown.com\/girl_about_town\/2008\/05\/public-record-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Link to this article<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Public Record<\/strong> is indeed, for the record, from our fair city of Philadelphia.\u00a0 They are a seven piece that lays on the rhythms without any vocals.\u00a0 The band is a smorgasbord of sounds &#8211; Funk, Northern Soul, Shoegaze, Afro-beat, Krautrock, Post Rock, Dub, and even Disco.\u00a0 If you listen closely you may hear faint late 70s\/early 80s Factory Records bliss along with Scottish Postcard Records -era pop (think Edwyn Collins and Orange Juice).\u00a0 No surprise here, for they count among their many and diverse influences Aztec Camera, The Fall, Jimmy Cliff, Alton Ellis, Can, The Clash, The Style Council, James Brown, Fela Kuti, and Galaxie 500.\u00a0 No doubt this record will have universal appeal.\u00a0 And yes, you can dance to it.<\/p>\n<p>This record is all about versatility, agility, complexity, and diversity.\u00a0 Even though the songs are dance-able, this isn&#8217;t a vacant pop record.\u00a0 It&#8217;s rich with jams &#8211; both long and short, layered with texture, and engaging &#8211; so much so that one could argue that it&#8217;s anti-pop in all the right ways.\u00a0 Repeated listens are in order at first to get aquainted with Public Record.\u00a0 The music is thoroughly unique but also reminsicent of so many things.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what came to our minds: dubby reggae from Gregory Issacs; &#8220;Smooth Operator&#8221; from Sade; the horns of Psychedelic Furs; John Lurie and The Lounge Lizards; and Eno era Talking Heads.<\/p>\n<p>Their self-titled debut album was released by Philly based <strong>High Two Records<\/strong> on April 8th.\u00a0 The album was recorded by Jeff Zeigler (known to many in Philly as the man behind band Relay).\u00a0 Founded in 2001 by Gareth Duffield (guitar) and Brent Bohan (bass), the band didn&#8217;t really gel until 2005 when a concrete lineup came together and a solid group of songs emerged.\u00a0 Adding a second guitarist, two drummers, a saxophonist, and a third percussonist, the band found its stride.\u00a0 All this makes for a mighty presence and one not to be missed, especially since the drums and horns are exhilirating and the beat is righteous.<\/p>\n<p>Public Record &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/publicrecord\"><strong>myspace<\/strong><\/a> \/ <strong><a href=\"..\/..\/\">high two<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"post-footers\">Posted by\u00a0 in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillygirlabouttown.com\/girl_about_town\/music_reviews\/\">Music Reviews<\/a> <\/span> <span class=\"separator\">|<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Author: Royce Epstein Source: Philly Girl About Town Link to this article Public Record is indeed, for the record, from [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"nf_dc_page":"","_eb_attr":"","advanced_seo_description":"","jetpack_seo_html_title":"","jetpack_seo_noindex":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[47,87,88,50,60],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1001","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-artists","category-ht017","category-public-record","category-releases","category-reviews"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","acf":[],"jetpack-related-posts":[{"id":986,"url":"https:\/\/hightwo.net\/two\/reviews-public-record\/","url_meta":{"origin":1001,"position":0},"title":"Reviews &#8211; Public Record","author":"admin","date":"March 26, 2009","format":false,"excerpt":"Author: Jason Ferguson Source: Reax May 2008 \"Public Record is a messy, funky and wide-ranging party band.Weaving afrobeat, dub, indie rock, spazzy post-punk, chunks of driving soul and an atmospheric jazziness into their sound, the instrumental sextet is hellbent on defying any strictures of genre expectation.
