On Monday, November 23 at 8pm, Shot x Shot will be performing the music of Tim Berne’s Bloodcount at Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia. The show is presented by Ars Nova Workshop and will also feature a screening of Susanna Schonberg’s “Eyenoises…the Paris Movie 1994″ (music by Bloodcount) and Bird Fly Yellow performing Julius Hemphill’s “Flat Out Jump Suite.”
We’re super excited for this show… we’re big fans of Tim Berne, particularly of his work with Bloodcount.

We have some performances coming up that we’re very excited about and so are you.
A Bowerbird show with special guest pianist Matt Mitchell, the very last Philly SciFi event ever (17 groups over 10 hours!), an Ars Nova concert where we play the music of Tim Berne’s Bloodcount, and a host of out-of-town shows…
We’ve also been working on new material for our third album. We’ll be performing these new compositions in the coming months, so please see our calender for details on upcoming appearances and check back soon for updates.

SciFi Philly Anniversary Celebration!

Last year, SxS saxophonist Dan Scofield, along with Jon Barrios and Steven Buono (and special help/love from Hightwo’s Dan Piotrowski), started a local music series in West Philly at the Ethiopian restaurant Gojjo. For those of you don’t know the full story, I offer these articles from The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia City Paper, Phrequency and of course SciFi Philly’s own website.
Thankfully, SciFi has been a huge success. I think it’s fair to call it the home front of Philadelphia’s improvised music scene, run by musicians for musicians (without feeling self-indulgent or alienating to listeners). It’s also the best place to see out of town acts that are up-and-coming or otherwise under the radar, but are of the highest caliber.
Now to the point. On Sunday, May 24, 2009 SciFi Philly celebrates it’s first successful year with 11 bands over the course of 7 hours. Starting at 2pm, the show will include performances from Shot x Shot, Jack Wright, Jon Barrios, Matt Mitchell, Bobby Zankel, OK OK, Pete Robbins and others. After the show, Ars Nova Workshop hosts the Sun Ra Arkestra, celebrating “Marshall Allen’s 85th birthday and the 95th anniversary of Sun Ra’s arrival on Earth.”

Members of SxS, as you are no doubt aware, also play in some other ripping bands and/or one-offs.
In case you didn’t know, this Sunday will be a good time to see the two of the top four members of SxS in a different setting.
Sunday, May 17 the SciFi series at Gojjo will feature Travis Woodson’s “Live Like A King” (featuring Shotter and SciFier, Danny Scofield)
Then, a very special appearance by Philly ex-pat, Rick Iannacone (leading a quartet featuring Matt Engle) will delight and thrill.

Two evenings of SxS: Mashups! New compositions! Etc!

We play in Philadelphia a lot. It’s our home town, our fan base is here. Those who come to our shows regularly have the opportunity to witness us develop compositions, concepts, etc. over time. However, since the April 2008 release of our record Let Nature Square, we’ve been playing material from that album almost exclusively. For those of you who’ve been looking forward to something new from the Shot boys, the time is nigh!

This weekend SxS will be playing two shows featuring new compositions and two great collaborations.

On Friday, December 5th, 8pm Shot x Shot will play at the Powel House as part of the Bower Bird series. We’ll play a set of new compositions and some reworked favorites from Let Nature Square. Following a brief intermission, we’ll carry on with an improvised set featuring Buchla Music Easel great Charles Cohen.

THEN

Sunday, December 7th, 8pm Shot x Shot will play a completely improvised set with Elliott Levin, Ed Watkins and Rick Iannacone (triumphant, uh, visit from Oregon!) at Gojjo as part of the Scifi Philly series.

So come out and experience the thrilling thrills, exciting excitement, etc., etc.

Phildelphia Official CD Release for Let Nature Square

We will be celebrating the official release of Let Nature Square Wednesday May 14th 2008 at the Rotunda! The show will be hosted by Bowerbird and will also feature performances by Eli Litwin, Jon Barrios, Carlos Santiago, Dave Smolen and Lionshead (feat. Julius Masri and Ben Remsen), plus a special screening of “CHARLES COHEN AT THE BUCHLA MUSIC EASEL” a new short film by Alex Tyson.
The show starts at 8pm and is FREE.

New York CD Release at The Stone

We will be playing at The Stone Friday, April 4th at 10pm celebrating the release of Let Nature Square. We’ll have copies of the new record on hand for sale ahead of the official release date. Also playing that night at 8pm is The Oscar Noriega Trio featuring John Hebert on bass, Tom Rainey on drums and Oscar Noriega on alto saxophone and bass clarinet.
